Under The Sink Built-In Shelf

I've got a fairly easy building project to share with you today. Another goodie from our bathroom makeover. One that honestly you probably never saw, since I don't think I shared the inside of the cabinets. Today we are addressing that blessed area under the sink.

Trying Things On For Size

Hey there! Today I want to chat about furniture. Sometimes I get in a rut with furniture. I have things placed and I like them and I don't change them. I used to move furniture around all the time in our previous home, but this house doesn't seem to offer as many options. However, a month or so ago I got the bug to try a few new things.

While we were painting the family room, hubby and I started brainstorming and came up with a new layout.

Functionality At It's Best

This month has been fun!!  I hope you have been inspired to love what you have rather than to just live with it.  Maybe you've noticed throughout this series that I have made it a point to say things must work for YOUR family.  I truly believe that!!  I don't think there is a right or wrong way!!  I do think that you should love where you are.  Make it work the best way you can.  Make it a space that not only works, but that you love.  Can I say that again??  Don't get stuck waiting for the next best thing, love what you have now!!

Go and do and inspire others!!  Thanks for tagging along this month!  And, now, for a long winter's nap....Ha!!  Just kidding ;).

Kitchens - The Heart of the Home

We all know that food brings people together. So, it's natural for guests to congregate in the kitchen!

For 11 years or so, I put up with our kitchen.  I did little things here and there to make it more efficient and functional for our family.  All the while dreaming of something better.

But, this was another space that was an all or nothing space.  I wanted to take down walls, moved appliances, and add a pantry.  If I couldn't do that then I didn't want to do anything.  I would just wait.

Wait for what??

To win the lottery??

So, finally one day in December, I took out a bucket of primer and a brush and took the first stroke.

The most terrifying thing - DIY wise - that I had ever done.  Of course, once that first stroke had happened, there was no turning back.

Not only did I not stop, I never looked back, and I don't regret a thing.  Except for the fact that I waited so long!!

We went on vacation this summer for the first time after the kitchen was completed and it was the first time that I actually smiled when I walked into the house, into my kitchen.  Strange huh?

Sometimes you need a little form to make a space function.  If you don't like being in there then how are you ever going to want to do anything in there??

My mood is so much different in my kitchen now!!

The Gathering Spaces

Today I'd like to chat with you about our gathering spaces.  Some call them living rooms and others call them family rooms.  Some people have two or three of these spaces and others one. No matter what you have, this is the place where the family gathers for all sorts of things.  Games, Television watching, conversation, napping, reading, etc.

The #1 priority of this space is comfort!!  If people are not comfortable in the space they won't use it.  You've been in those houses with the 'formal' living area - so pretty and pristine that it feels more like a museum than a living space.

We all want beautiful spaces, but we must find a balance between design and function. And yes, you can have both!!

Again, as with all our spaces, begin with evaluating the main uses of the space.  We all love a pretty fire place, and design tells us it should be the focal point of the living room, but if you rarely use it, then why??  It can still be a lovely accent to the room, but focus on what is used in the room.  If we are honest, we would all say that the TV is the most used item.  So, arrange the seating so that plenty of people can view it.  I'm not saying that ALL the seating in the room has to face the TV just enough.

But, TV's are not pretty.  At least the newer flat screens are not quite as obnoxious.  But, still we would prefer for them to at least blend in a bit, right??  I know it's not ALL about the TV, but today it is ;).  Here are some ideas.

Again, please, please, please pin from the original source for these photos by clicking on the links below each photo.  This way the person responsible for the loveliness gets the credit. Thanks!:)

Which works as a great spot for our TV.

I'll be back on Monday to talk some more about making our gathering spaces functional. Have a fabulous weekend friends!!
